Whitman, then the chairman of MIT's Chemical Engineering Department, the story of his organizing the First Geneva Conference in 1954. Thus, the peaceful use of nuclear energy started with international cooperation even between the West and the East. In 1957 this led to the creation of the IAEA as a UN organization for international cooperation toward the peaceful use of nuclear energy and toward security for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
