By far the most successful were the duck-billed dinosaurs or hadrosaurs which evolved from the larger heavily built ornithopods. These developed an enormous battery of grinding teeth for dealing with tough plant materials such as pine needles, but by far the most curious structures were the variously shaped crests on the top of the skull. These contained greatly expanded nasal passages and their interpretation has been a subject of considerable discussion. The latest theory is that they acted as resonating chambers for the dinosaurs to call to one another.
D. Walker and this is a monument to his remarkable skill in studying probably the most difficult dinosaur fossils ever discovered. Most of the remains are preserved as holes in the rock. The bones have long thosuchus away simply leaving holes as the only evidence of former existence. From the quarries all the rocks that had holes in them were collected and the holes filled with a flexible plastic material, which was then extracted to reveal the original shape of the bones. In this way after many years it was possible to put together a complete reconstruction of the skeleton.
One of the most surprising aspects of the tyrannosaurs was the reduction in the size of the forelimbs and the loss of all but two fingers. Although the young tyrannosaurs could have been active hunters, the adults were slow moving ponderous scavengers. Tyrannosaurus rex Tyrannosaurus rex (8) is one of the most popular of all the dinosaurs by being some 12m (40ft) long and weighing about 6 tonnes in life, and also by its evocative name meaning 'king of the tyrant reptiles'. In spite of its familiarity not a single complete skeleton has ever been found.
