In December Jimmy left Tallahassee, having told only a few friends and teachers that he wasn’t coming back. Jimmy and Mary had a vague plan that she would come to Los Angeles when she graduated from high school in June. They would find an apartment and live together. Jimmy left his books with his grandparents and flew to California, spending Christmas with his family in Coronado.

Confronted with being a complete asshole, he just laughed at them. “Jimmy didn’t give a good goddamn,” one of them recalled. “But he was really funny. ” For a while, they put up with him because he was obviously brilliant in a laconic way. His room was a jumble of hundreds of books. With eyes shut tight behind his shades, Jimmy challenged visitors to pick any book and read the first sentence, and he would identify the title and the writer. He was never wrong. He avidly read the popular sociologists of the day, with a special interest in crowd psychology as it related to drama and the theater.

As a navy photographer documented the visit, Captain Morrison ordered his carrier out to sea. Jimmy observed the ship’s marines conduct a live-fire exercise, and reluctantly joined in firing at floating targets with an M16 rifle.
