Lamentably, Japanese architecture has sacrificed its distinctive characteristics, but newer buildings are brighter, smarter, more airy, handicap-accessible, energy-efficient, and user-friendly. Automobile makers are producing more ecofriendly cars and, despite the premium price they command, sales have far exceeded expectations. Moreover, there has been a shift away from dirty diesel fuel for trucks and buses, and stricter emission regulations are being enforced. On the social front, society has made some progress in treating the weak and vulnerable with greater dignity and assumed more responsibility towards them.

The ‘betrayal’ of older staff is also affecting perceptions among younger workers, making it more difficult for firms to inspire their loyalty and willingness to make personal sacrifices as they have in the past. Unionization in Japan has declined over recent decades, a trend reinforced by developments in the 1990s. Enterprise unions have long been part of the institutional structure of labor in Japan, eschewing a confrontational, antimanagement stance in favor of a cooperative relationship with employers.

The fact that Japan has yet to reap many of the benefits of this impending revolution suggests that the economy of the future will be more dynamic than most forecasters are predicting. All these developments reflect major and abrupt shifts in national ideology – many of the myths and taboos that up till now have stymied critical analysis of society have been shattered, trampled upon and superceded by events. Only those who have lived through it can truly appreciate what a dynamic and tumultuous period this has been.
