Rao was one of the founding fathers of modern physics in China. He offered great assistance to young teachers to catch up with the fast development of optics and spectroscopy since the advent of lasers. Rao was elected Academician of the Academia Sinica in 1948 and was invited to be a member of Math-Physics Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955. In the turmoil years of “culture revolution”, he passed away on October 16, 1968 with great indignation owing to the insult and persecution forced to him.
