After the attempted rape, Buffy’s reaction is shown mainly through language, in her painful conversation with her friend Xander, but Spike’s is shown in visual representations of his thoughts, ﬂashbacks of his memories of Buffy’s struggle, and the discordant music suggests that the memories horrify him.
Harvey Greenberg, in his psychoanalytic discussion of teens and Spock, suggests that Spock’s half-alien body reﬂects the physical changes adolescents sense taking place in themselves. The physical changes in this series’ vampires’ faces, along with their greater bodily strength, might be said to perform the same function (not to mention the fact that they stay up late). In the ﬁrst season, the series focuses on confronting adulthood through confronting distinctly older vampires. “The Old Ones,” both Giles and the vampire Master call them—and both their physical traits and their language (of which, more later) suggest adulthood.
Less attention has been given to the visual elements of the series, though PainasBrightasSteel 31 on occasion writers such as J. P. Williams and Dave West have discussed the subject. But as Camille Bacon-Smith has pointed out in her essay “The Color of the Dark,” television creators like Joss Whedon “can depend on a meshing of the visual and verbal to create both a narrative message and a metaphoric one …” (xii). Light imagery is a particularly important example of the connection of the visual and the verbal in Buffy.
