In contrast, there will be schools which will continue to prepare children very adequately for the 1980s and 1990s—as they did for the 1880s and 1890s. But what of the majority of schools? Two scenarios are offered here. In the first, pupil numbers continue to fall, albeit with a hiccup in the mid-1980s, schools become considerably smaller, staffs become stagnant except for redeployment, local education authorities become increasingly inbred, in-service education is cut back, and isolationism at the class, school and LEA level increases.
