My time had come. Everybody watch and learn. I looked around. No-one was paying me any attention, other than the tall redhead named Liam who was holding my rope. I was sure they soon would be. I placed my hand on a big lump and one foot on the rock and pulled my weight upwards. My foot slipped off, and I cracked my knee hard against the rock. Ouch! Oh well, a bad start. After half an hour I was a few metres off the ground. My legs and arms were shaking with fatigue and I was hunting desperately for a hold that was bigger than the tiny ledges around me.

He hated the very thought of getting dirty and camping, and his interest in climbing died an early death when I proved to be better at it than he was. His idea of a holiday was a five-star hotel, and my idea of a holiday was a bush bash with climbing gear and a tent. He was the most disciplined and focused person I had ever met. At that stage I was attending about fifty per cent of my lectures in a good week. Nevertheless, we got on like a house on fire. We started out as mates, then embarked on a relationship which was primarily an amazing friendship, and as such was virtually impossible to break up from.

The first crossing was shallow enough to sit in, so we let the cool water wash the heat away from our sweaty and dusty bodies. From then on we couldn’t resist the temptation to do the same at each refreshing crossing, and it was late evening by the time we reached Lawn Hill Gorge. There is something really wonderful about arriving at a place in the dark. Your impressions of your surroundings are based only on a narrow beam of torchlight and the sounds and smells around you. Is that water over there?
