The Gentile Education Refonn of 1 923 put a fascist sta1np on the school curriculum and the regime quicldy ensured that schools used a new generation of textbooks full of propaganda 1naterial - though the regi1ne's concessions to the Catholic Church meant that fascist propaganda in schools had to compete with Catholic religious instruction, especially in pri1nary schools.
